Japanese manufacturers, residents of the BLAND unit in the trauma ward that is the modern auto industry (for the most part), put out some huge and extremely popular sports cars in the 90's.

Toyota had the twin-turbo Supra; Mitsubishi had the 3000GT VR-4; Mazda had the twin-turbo RX-7 and Nissan had the twin-turbo 300ZX and Skyline GT-Rs. And Honda? Well, they tried to pick a fight with Ferrari with their naturally-aspirated V6-powered NSX, but as for the common man? That's where the SSM concept stepped in, foreshadowing the S2000 roadster.

Debut (Concept): Honda unveiled the SSM concept, which stands for Sports Study Model, at the 1995 Tokyo Motor Show.

Debut (Prototype ; Production): Following the presentation of a pre-production prototype in September 1998, Honda launched the S2000 onto the market in April 1999 in celebration of the firm's 50th anniversary.

Lost in translation: While keeping the basic shape of the SSM, the S2000's styling was less extravagant with Honda's designers eliminating/redesigning several elements such as the large rear diffuser, low-riding headlights, geometric rollover hoops and passenger compartment divider.

But we got to keep: The same basic front-engine/rear-wheel-drive, 2-seat roadster layout, the fancy push-button starter, rigidity-enhancing x-bone monocoque frame, and that 50/50 weight distribution.

And gained: A roof as the folding soft top came as standard with an aluminum hardtop offered optionally.

Fun fact: Similar to Audi's TT (depending on who you believe), the Honda S2000's nomenclature was pulled from the company's past: the S made it a modern-day successor to Honda's small roadsters of the 60's (S500, S600, S800), while the number represents the engine's displacement (until the updated AP2 generation upped the displacement for the NA-spec model from 1,997 cc to 2,157 cc while retaining the S2000 name).

Did you know? The S2000 roadster's 240PS 2.0-litre engine 9,000 rpm VTEC four-pot (2.2-liter for the North American model from 2004 and onwards) remains one of the highest output per liter and highest revving series production engines ever made

Sales: Since its introduction in 1999 and until June 2009, Honda sold more than 110,700 units of the S2000 worldwide with more than 65,000 making their way to the United States alone.

Where is it now? After ten years in production, the S2000 reached the end of its life last year with the last ever car rolling off the line at Suzuka, Japan in June 2009. Unfortunately, there's no replacement in sight.

The Audi TT launched in 1999 to shock and awe. The original car was unlike any car before it, and its influences both on the design of Audis which followed and the TT's coupe rivals. The second generation replaced it in 2006, and offers a more mature appearance. Some criticised it for lacking the artistic drama of the first car, but Audi's design had moved on adopting a more sober look.

The Audi TT still has a short, curvy stance, with a curvaceous roofline and slightly flared wheelarches. The front features Audi's trademark grille and a pair of sculpted headlines containing intricate patterns hiding sidelights and indicators. The smooth rear now has a pop-up spoiler which replaced the stubby, stuck-up wing that kept the first generation model pinned to the road at high speed.

Mercedes has released new details about their "near-production" BlueZERO E-Cell Plus Concept, which originally debuted at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Featuring an 18 kWh lithium-ion battery, the car is recharged by a 1.0-liter turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine that produces 50 kW (67 hp). This unique combination allows the E-Cell Plus to travel up to 100 km on electricity alone, before the gasoline engine kicks in to extend its range an additional 500 km.

The battery is connected to a compact electric motor that produces 100 kW and 320 Nm of torque. 0 to 100 km/h comes in less than 11 seconds, while the top speed is electronically limited to 150 km/h (93 mph).

While the range extender is a nice feature, the biggest breakthrough is the car's recharging technology. Using a special 20 kW rapid charger, the E-Cell can be charged enough for a 50 km trip in just 30 minutes. If you have time to spare, the car can be fully charged in about an hour. Unfortunately if you want to use a standard 3.3 kW household outlet, the charging time climbs to approximately 6 hours.

As you may recall, Mercedes also built two other E-Cell concepts: the BlueZERO E-Cell and the BlueZero F-cell. The standard BlueZERO E-cell is powered solely by an electric motor, which enables it to travel up to 200 km. On the other hand, the BlueZero F-Cell features a hydrogen fuel-cell that allows it to travel up to 400 km on electricity alone.

Look for a production version of the Mercedes E-Cell Plus to be unveiled in the coming years.

ABT Sportsline has released details of its new Golf GTD. The car is based on the new Golf TDI with a 103kW (140hp) 2.0 TDI engine, but the more powerful factory GTD makes 125kW (170hp). ABT engineers have improved both power and torque to give it 140kW (190hp) and maximum torque of 390Nm. Zero to 100km/h is reached in 7.1 seconds and top speed is 230km/h. Driving the front wheels is a 7-speed DSG transmission. Fuel consumption figures were not provided but ABT says its car remains fuel efficient with low C02 emissions.

Exterior modifications include a new front grille, front skirt, side skirts, a rear skirt, a rear wing and a four-pipe rear muffler. The wheels and tyres can be selected in either 18-inch or 19-inch sizes. The suspension can be lowered by 30mm for improved handling and performance. It does not do the overall looks any harm either.

Because of these enhancements ABT - the biggest tuner of Volkswagen/ Audi vehicles - changed the GTD abbreviation to stand for "Gewinner Tanken Diesel" or "Winners tank diesel" instead of the official Gran Touring Diesel.

Hyundai's vehicles may not be class leaders, they may not be the most exciting and they may not be the most likely to be noticed on your block. However, the Korean carmaker that could has become a solid alternative choice for value-conscious shoppers in search of sensible, well-made transportation at a low price. The 2010 Hyundai Veracruz certainly fills that bill, giving folks an alternative in the large family crossover category. It's not the biggest, the flashiest or the most fun, but the Veracruz should still serve your family well.

Although the Veracruz competes with models from Chevrolet, Ford and Mazda, Hyundai actually benchmarked the Lexus RX 350 luxury crossover. Indeed, a top-of-the-line Veracruz Limited offers the sort of build quality and features typically expected of an entry-level luxury vehicle. The power, ride and interior noise are also indicative of a more expensive crossover, while cool blue lighting, wood trim and an available two-tone interior color scheme add a bit of flair.

Of course, this is still a family vehicle with a low price and a lengthy warranty. Standard features are plentiful, with even the base model equipped with niceties like rear parking sensors, heated seats, satellite radio and an iPod interface. Desirable upgrades like a power tailgate, navigation, leather upholstery and a rear-seat entertainment system are more inexpensive on the Veracruz than they are on competing models. All Veracruz models also come standard with seating for seven passengers, though the third row is intended more for children. The Ford Flex, Mazda CX-9 and GM's Traverse/Acadia/Enclave triplets' rearmost rows are friendlier for adults.

That last point is probably the biggest case against the 2010 Hyundai Veracruz -- it's just not as practical as its competitors. We'd be willing to forgive this shortcoming if it was more fuel-efficient or more enjoyable to drive, but the Veracruz is not. Instead, this Hyundai will appeal because of the value and warranty that goes along with an otherwise well-rounded vehicle. So like other Hyundai offerings, the Veracruz may not be an all-star, but it certainly gets the job done.
